Sonarr, from anywhere

Check what's downloading or add a show while you're away, without exposing Sonarr.

About 5 minutes·Works on the free plan

You'll need

  • Sonarr running on a machine at home
  • Docker
  • A free Seawise.io account

Step by step

Everything happens in your browser except step 1.

1

Run the Seawise.io container

Run this on the machine where Sonarr runs. The container connects out to Seawise.io, so you don't open any ports on your router.

On Docker Desktop for Mac or Windows, replace --network host with -p 8082:8082.

your server
$ docker run -d --name seawise \
  --restart unless-stopped \
  --network host \
  -v seawise-data:/config \
  ghcr.io/seawise-io/seawise-client:latest

✓ Container started

2

Set a password

On a computer at home, open http://your-server-ip:8082 and create a password for the container's page.

Do this straight after starting the container. Whoever opens this page first sets the password.
3

Connect it to your account

Give the server a name, click Connect, and approve it in the seawise.io tab that opens. Sign up for free there if you haven't yet.

4

Add Sonarr

Fill in the name, the address and the port Sonarr uses (8989 by default), then click Add.

Which address? With --network host, use localhost. On Docker Desktop, use host.docker.internal. If Sonarr runs on another machine, use its local IP, like 192.168.1.20.
5

Open it from anywhere

Sonarr now shows on your Servers page at seawise.io. Click it from any browser, on any network, and you're in.

6

Share it

Go to Portals, create one (say, Family), and add Sonarr to it. Then open its sharing settings and add the email of everyone who should get in.

Skip this step if Sonarr is just for you.

7

What they see

Send them the portal link. They sign in with the email you added, using Google, GitHub or an email link, and tap Sonarr. Nothing to install, on any phone, tablet or laptop.

Sonarr settings to check

01

Require a login for every request

Open Settings > General > Security. Pick Forms (Login Page) for a normal login screen, and set Authentication Required to Enabled, which the Sonarr wiki recommends.

02

Check Allowed Hosts

Sonarr only accepts the hostnames in Allowed Hosts when that list has entries. Add your-app.seawise.dev there, or leave it blank with Authentication Required set to Enabled.

03

Keep URL Base blank

Sonarr's URL Base is only for hosting it under a subfolder. Each Seawise.io app has its own address, so no prefix is needed.

If something's not working

Sonarr shows as offline+

Seawise.io can't reach port 8989. Run curl http://localhost:8989 on the server; if Sonarr is on another machine, add it by that machine's LAN IP.

Forgot the Sonarr password+

Stop Sonarr and remove the AuthenticationMethod line from config.xml in the appdata folder. On the next start Sonarr opens without a password and prompts you to set a new one.

Sonarr apps on your phone can't add the server+

They talk to Sonarr's API directly and never see the Seawise.io sign-in, so they only work once Sonarr is public on the Admin plan. At that point your API key is all that guards the API, so keep it secret.

Good to know

Patch older v4 installs

Sonarr fixed a login bypass affecting Disabled for Local Addresses in v4.0.16.2944. Update, and keep Authentication Required on Enabled.

Try it on your own server.
